University Department of Music (SAX AND THE CITY; "Festival of New

During the first weekend
of March, the Brown University Department of Music and Brown New
Music will host SAX AND THE CITY, an international festival of new
music. In residence at the festival, the Trio Saxiana from Paris,
France will present a concert of world premiers featuring music from
France, Germany, and the United States on Friday, March 2 at 8:00.
Four of the composers whose works are performed on that concert will
be in residence as well, the French composer Thierry Pécou,
and the Americans Neely Bruce, Mark Phillips and Gerald Shapiro. On
Saturday, March 3 at 8:00, a second concert, using a mixed ensemble
of student and professional players, will present another set of
pieces by the visiting composers. The visitors will help prepare the
students in their pieces and participate in the performance. In
addition, they will meet with classes and individual composition
students in the Department. At 4:00 on Friday afternoon, the visiting
composers will jointly present a departmental colloquium and discuss
their new pieces. Saturday afternoon from 1:00 to 5:00, Trio Saxiana
will work with Brown student composers rehearsing and recording their
compositions. All events in the festival will take place in the newly
renovated Grant Recital Hall and are free and open to the public.
Funding is from the Department and from CAC.
