Bordogni and the bel canto tradition for Brass Instruments

Bordogni's vocalises for the development of the legato playing and breath control has been used extensively since more than a century now. Many known adaptations of this large corpus appeared in different parts of the world but their origin seems to fade out today.

A vocalise is a textless vocal exercise or concert piece to be sung to one or more vowels. In the early 19th century, it became customary to sing simple exercises and solfeggi with piano accompaniment. With the numerous publications that followed, more elaborate compositions appeared.

The presentation focuses on the relationship voice-instrument in the second part of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. Marco Bordogni (1789-1856) will be examined as a performer, a teacher and a composer. Principals of the sempre legato e portando la voce in different vocal and instrumental methods will be examined. Adaptations of his vocalises for different brass instruments are closely related to the study material developed at this period.
